WEEE Directive | 09 Nov 2006
It is now anticipated that the WEEE (Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment) Directive will be implemented in June 2007 – it aims to encourage a sustainable approach to the manufacture and disposal of classified electrical and electronic products.
WEEE applies to equipment that is dependent on electric or electro-magnetic fields and designed for use with a voltage rating not exceeding 1,000 volts for alternating current and 1,500 for direct current, for equipment falling into the following categories:
- Large household appliances
- Small household appliances
- IT and telecommunications equipment
- Consumer equipment
- Lighting equipment
- Electrical and electronic tools
- Toys, leisure and sports equipment
- Medical devices
- Monitoring and control equipment
- Automatic dispensers
To finance the Directive, it is anticipated that products affected will be subject to price review. A further update will be made available as soon as timescales etc. are confirmed by the DTI.
