WEEE Directive | 09 Nov 2006

It is now anticipated that the WEEE (Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment) Directive will be implemented in June 2007 – it aims to encourage a sustainable approach to the manufacture and disposal of classified electrical and electronic products.

WEEE applies to equipment that is dependent on electric or electro-magnetic fields and designed for use with a voltage rating not exceeding 1,000 volts for alternating current and 1,500 for direct current, for equipment falling into the following categories:

  1. Large household appliances
  2. Small household appliances
  3. IT and telecommunications equipment
  4. Consumer equipment
  5. Lighting equipment
  6. Electrical and electronic tools
  7. Toys, leisure and sports equipment
  8. Medical devices
  9. Monitoring and control equipment
  10. Automatic dispensers

To finance the Directive, it is anticipated that products affected will be subject to price review. A further update will be made available as soon as timescales etc. are confirmed by the DTI.
